Gustave Doré

Born in Strasbourg in 1832, Gustave Doré, a precocious illustrator and cartoonist, devoted his early years as an artist to sketching his era, sometimes with malice, always with accuracy. By juxtaposing texts and drawings, he announced the rise of the comic strip. Excellent director, he illustrates from 1961 the great texts of classical literature, from Rabelais to Balzac, from Dante to Charles Perrault. His engravings are now famous throughout the world.
